Ending Femicide Together: Accountability, Empowerment, and Change

Introduction:

Femicide, the intentional killing of women because they are women, is a devastating reality that Usikimye is committed to ending. The Femicide Accountability and Community Empowerment (FACE) Program is our comprehensive approach to tackling this urgent issue.

We believe that by combining community empowerment with demanding accountability, we can create a society where women and girls are safe and valued.

Understanding the Roots of Femicide:

As illustrated in our Gender-Based Violence Pyramid, femicide is not an isolated act. It is the extreme manifestation of a spectrum of violence and discrimination. It is rooted in:

Harmful Gender Stereotypes: Sexist language, “jokes,” and micro aggressions that normalize disrespect and contribute to a culture where violence is tolerated.
Misogyny and Objectification: Catcalling, victim-blaming, and the objectification of women perpetuate a sense of entitlement and dehumanization.
Sexual Coercion and Violence: Harassment, coercive control, and physical and sexual violence are direct precursors to femicide.
The FACE Program: Our Approach

The FACE Program is built on three core pillars:

Accountability:

  • We demand justice for victims of femicide by advocating for thorough investigations and prosecutions.
  • We work to hold perpetrators accountable and challenge the systemic failures that allow these crimes to occur.
  • We track and document cases of femicide to provide accurate data and raise awareness.
  • We have been very active in protests to amplify the issue of femicide and demand action from authorities.
    Community

Empowerment:

  • We provide support and resources to survivors of gender-based violence and families affected by femicide.
  • We empower communities to recognize and challenge harmful gender norms.
  • We facilitate workshops and training on consent, healthy relationships, and bystander intervention.
  • We create safe spaces for women and girls to share their experiences and build solidarity.
  • Prevention and Education:
  • We raise awareness about the root causes of femicide through public campaigns and educational initiatives.
  • We engage with schools, community leaders, and policymakers to promote gender equality.
  • We work to change the narrative around gender-based violence and challenge the culture of silence.

Our Impact:

Usikimye has been at the forefront of the fight against femicide in Kenya. We have:

  • Organized numerous protests to demand justice and raise awareness.
  • Provided support to countless survivors and families.
  • Contributed to the growing national conversation about femicide.
