Binti Shine

Empowering Adolescent Girls & Young Women to Thrive

At Usikimye, we believe every adolescent girl and young woman(AGYW) deserves a life free from fear, rich with knowledge, and vibrant with potential. Our Binti Shine program is dedicated to making this a reality for girls and young women aged 13-23 years in the communities of Soweto and Kayole.

Binti Shine is more than just a program; it's a journey of empowerment. We address the unique barriers adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) face, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions about their bodies, their relationships, and their futures.

How Binti Shine Makes a Difference

Our Pillars of Empowerment

The Binti Shine program operates through interconnected initiatives, each designed to 'shine a light' on critical aspects of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and holistic well-being:

Shine a Light on SRHR

Foundational Knowledge for Informed Choices
Knowledge is power, and at the core of Binti Shine is our comprehensive SRHR education. We create safe and engaging spaces where AGYW can openly learn about:

  • Puberty and Body Changes: Demystifying physical and emotional transformations.
  • Menstrual Health: Accurate information and practical guidance on menstrual hygiene.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Understanding prevention, symptoms, and access to testing and treatment.
  • Healthy Relationships: Exploring dynamics of respect, communication, and boundaries.
  • Body Mapping: An interactive technique fostering self-awareness and confidence.

Shine the Light Campaign

Community Awareness for Collective Change
Real change happens when the entire community is engaged. Our “Shine the Light Campaign” reaches parents and community leaders in Soweto and Kayole through awareness campaigns and dialogues to:

  • Demystify SRHR: Breaking down myths and stigma.
  • Promote Open Communication: Encouraging supportive conversations about SRHR within families.
  • Address Gender-Based Violence (GBV): Raising awareness about different forms of GBV, its impact, and the importance of prevention and reporting.
  • Build a Supportive Environment: Fostering communities where AGYW feel safe, respected, and supported.

Shine Your Skills

Building Confidence and Resilience
Beyond knowledge, Binti Shine equips AGYW with essential life skills through our “Shine Your Skills” module. Using engaging and interactive methods, including drama, we empower participants to:

  • Develop Negotiation Skills: Communicate needs and boundaries effectively.
  • Practice Assertiveness: Gain confidence to speak up and make their voices heard.
  • Understand and Practice Consent: Grasp the fundamental concept of enthusiastic consent.
  • Master Refusal Skills: Learn to say “no” confidently and safely.
  • Prevent GBV: Acquire practical strategies for personal safety and for identifying and responding to situations of violence.

Shine Together

Building Peer Networks and Leaders
Empowerment flourishes when supported by peers. Binti Shine fosters a powerful network of peer support and leadership within the AGYW community:

  • Shine Squads: Safe, confidential peer support groups where AGYW can share experiences, discuss challenges, find solidarity, and reinforce positive behaviors. These squads provide a vital space for continuous learning and emotional well-being.
  •  Shine Ambassadors: Dedicated AGYW trained as peer educators. These ambassadors become local champions, equipped to:
    • Disseminate accurate SRHR information in an accessible way.
    • Facilitate discussions and lead small group activities.
    • Serve as positive role models and trusted points of contact.
    • Extend the program’s reach organically within their communities, ensuring

Shine a Path to Services

Connecting to Youth-Friendly Health Care
Knowledge and skills are most powerful when combined with access. “Shine a Path to Services” ensures AGYW can access the healthcare they need. We actively work to:

  •  Establish Linkages: Build strong partnerships with local youth-friendly health facilities in Soweto and Kayole.
  • Facilitate Access: Help AGYW overcome barriers to accessing essential SRHR services (e.g., contraception, STI testing, antenatal care, post-GBV services).
  • Reduce Stigma: Work with health providers and communities to create welcoming, non-judgmental environments.
  • Empower Navigation: Teach AGYW how to navigate health systems and advocate for their own health needs.

The Binti Shine SRHR Festival

A Celebration of Empowerment
The Binti Shine program culminates in a vibrant SRHR Festival – a joyful and educational event that celebrates the journey of empowerment. This festival serves as a platform for:

  • Showcasing Learning: Participants demonstrate knowledge and skills through performances and interactive displays.
    * Community Engagement: Bringing together AGYW, parents, community members, and partners in a celebratory atmosphere.
    * Reinforcing Messages: Further disseminating vital SRHR and GBV prevention messages in an accessible and memorable way.
    * Building Connections: Fostering a stronger sense of community and support networks.
Our Vision: Brighter Futures for AGYW
Through Binti Shine, Usikimye envisions a future where adolescent girls and young women in Soweto and Kayole are:
    * Informed and Empowered: Confident in their knowledge and choices regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
    * Safe and Resilient: Equipped with skills to prevent GBV and navigate challenging situations, with access to essential services.
